Buff Willow
Willow that has had the bark stripped through boiling, giving it an orange/toffee colour. I weave using Somerset willow, regarded as the best quality basketry willow.

Lining
The coffin is lined with 208gsm Calico cotton, unbleached. This is a sturdy and eco-friendly material. The lining is fixed into the coffin using 100% cotton thread, hand-stitched around each upright to ensure it is securely fastened.

Rope
Each Coffin has six handles. 14mm Flax Hemp Rope is used for the handles. All six handles are made from one continuous piece, twisted around each upright and then spliced together. Shorter lengths are then inserted behind the handles to ensure an even finish. A single rope handle has been tested to securely hold 190kg without failure.

Base
The coffin base is made from OSB, as this is safe for both cremation and burial. Willow uprights are inserted into the base board at a spacing of 2.5 inches. Each upright is woven across and trapped behind the next upright, ensuring each upright is held securely to the base. This method of attaching the uprights to the base allows the coffin to slide easily on rollers and be carried on the shoulders comfortably.

Lid & Toggles
The lid has a centre of 6"x1" planed pine. 7mm Flax Hemp rope is used for the toggles and loops. The toggles themselves are made from 2"x1" pine. The wooden areas of the lid and toggles are finished with Unboiled Linseed Oil. This is non-toxic and safe for cremation. The exterior of a buff willow coffin can also be finished with unboiled linseed oil, this is unnecessary for brown willow coffins.
